Island
Railways Staff Social History Project
Can you help us with this Social
History Project?
|
Brading Town Council is carrying out a project to expand on the information
already held about people who have worked on the Island Railways between 1860 and 1980.
First and foremost we would like to concentrate on people who have worked
at Brading Station with the aim of completing a timeline that includes staff such as Station Masters,
Signalmen and porters etc who were employed at Brading. But at the same time we would also like to know more
about people who worked for the Island Railways during the 120 year period.
The information will be catalogued and added to the existing heritage
records held at Brading Station, and will be available for visitors to view and use for
reference.
If you have any information you would be willing to share with us, such as
employees names, job, dates of employment with the railway and any photographs, please come along to Brading
Station any day until the 30 September 2011 between 10am and 4pm and talk to the staff
there.
For further information you can phone 01983 401770 or e
mail townclerk@brading.gov.uk or pop into Brading Station, or visit www.bradingtowncouncil.org.uk or www.bradingstation.com.

Brading
Station wins National Heritage Award!

|
In December we were lucky enough to win the National Railway Heritage Trust
Conservation Award for the restoration project at the station.
This plaque was recently unveiled and is in the Station Visitor Center for all
to see.
The unveiling started with a welcome and a brief history of the project by
Robin Attwood who is a Brading Town Council member whose interest is traffic and transport. Andy
Savage, Chief Executive of The Railway Heritage Trust then told everyone about the awards and why
we had won it, before unveiling the plaque.
The Conservation Award is for work to a listed building and last year the
Brading Project was judged to be the best in the country in its class.
Most people had a tour of the Signal Box and this was followed by a
"Railwaymen's Lunch".
It all went very well and for a change the sun shone!
Those attending were:
Andy Savage - Railway Heritage Trust
Peter Vale & Jim Lowe from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - who have
always supported and helped with everything we've done.
Robin Maconchy & Laurence Hibberd from RM Associates - the architects for
the project.
John Martin - the builder
Carol Flux - from Natural Enterprise - Carol is the contact for the Grant
Funding from the LEADER grant fund source.
Phil from Island Line
Ian Schaff - from the Community Rail Partnership.
Ray Maxfield, John Rand & Douglas Ware - volunteers who do the guided tours
of the box.
Lynne Attwood & Chris offer - from the Town Trust.
Molly & John Pewsey - who very kindly took some photos.
Well done to all involved in this project
